Google Ads Integration with Vector: Understanding Audience Sizes

Last updated: August 25, 2025

Overview

Vector integrates with Google Ads by creating dynamic audience lists inside your Vector account and then exporting those lists into Google Ads. Once the list is in Google, it becomes a Customer Match audience, which Google processes according to its own systems and policies.

Because of how this process works, you may notice that the audience size shown in Vector does not exactly match what you see in Google Ads. This is expected behavior—and in most cases, the audience in Google will increase over time.

1. How the Integration Works

  1. Segments in Vector:

    • You build your audience in Vector using filters.

    • These lists are dynamic, meaning they keep updating automatically as contacts meet the criteria.

  2. Export to Google Ads:

    • Once created, Vector sends the hashed contact data to Google Ads.

    • Google then attempts to match this data with signed-in Google users.

  3. Audience becomes live in Google Ads:

    • A Customer Match audience is created in your Google Ads account.

    • The audience will start showing a size once Google begins recognizing matches.

2. Why Numbers Differ Between Vector and Google Ads

It’s normal to see differences between the list size in Vector and the audience size reported in Google Ads. Some common reasons include:

  • Matching process: Google only counts users it can identify as signed-in Google account holders. Not every contact in Vector has a Google account.

  • Time lag: Audience sizes in Google don’t update instantly. It can take days—or even weeks—for the numbers to grow as Google processes more matches.

  • Privacy thresholds: For privacy reasons, Google will only show an audience size once a minimum number of users are matched. Before that, you may see “Too small to serve.”

  • Incremental growth: Vector might show the total contacts in your list, while Google Ads shows only the portion currently matched. Over time, as more users log in or data is refreshed, the Google audience typically increases.

3. What to Expect Over Time

  • Day 1: You may only see a small portion of your Vector audience matched in Google Ads.

  • Following days/weeks: The number in Google should rise as more matches are made and as your dynamic list in Vector continues adding fresh contacts.

  • Ongoing: Audience sizes in Google Ads often fluctuate, reflecting how Google updates its matching pool.

4. Best Practices

To get the best results from your Vector → Google Ads audiences:

  • Use complete data: Include multiple identifiers (emails, phone numbers) to improve match rates (Vector automatically does this for you!).

  • Allow time: Don’t judge performance based on the first few hours—give Google at least several days.

  • Enable audience expansion or Smart Bidding: Let Google extend reach to similar audiences once Customer Match is in place.

  • Check eligibility: Ensure your Google Ads account meets Customer Match requirements.

5. Key Takeaway

When you export a Vector audience to Google Ads, you’re seeing two different systems at work:

  • Vector shows the full size of your dynamic list.

  • Google Ads shows only the portion of that list they can successfully match to Google users—often starting small and increasing over time.

This difference is expected and doesn’t mean your Vector audience is wrong. It simply reflects how Google processes Customer Match lists.

6. FAQ

Q: My Vector list shows 5,000 contacts, but Google Ads only shows 1,200. Why?
A: This is expected. Google Ads only counts contacts it can match to signed-in Google users. Over time, this number may increase as Google processes more matches.

Q: How long does it take for my Google Ads audience to update?
A: It can take several hours to a few days. Audience sizes in Google Ads don’t update instantly and often grow gradually.

Q: Why does Google say “Too small to serve”?
A: Google won’t show an audience size until a minimum threshold of users is matched. Once enough contacts are verified, you’ll see the size update.

Q: Does this mean Vector is sending fewer contacts than it shows?
A: No. Vector exports your full dynamic list. The difference comes from Google’s side, as it only shows the portion it can successfully match.
